Characteristics

Plant a much branched glabrescent sub-scandent shrub to 1.5 m tall. Roots fibrous. Branches 7-8 mm in diameter, grey-green due to a powdery bloom, the lower branches to 15 mm in diameter with smooth brownish bark becoming more woody with age; nodes 10-50 mm apart. Leaves crowded at the ends of the branches, decussate, ascending-spreading, dorso-ventrally compressed 70-95 x 28-46 mm, obovate to linear obovate, grey-green, occasionally with a reddish margin; petiole short, indistinct, base cuneate, apex mucronate. Inflorescence an ascending thyrse 200-550 mm long bearing 1-3 dichasia; peduncle with two pairs of bracts. Corolla yellow, 25 x 18 mm, the tube 18-20 mm long on slender pedicels 18-30 mm long; lobes lanceolate, 15 x 6 mm long becoming recoiled; surface glabrous except for a tuft of hairs where filaments fused to tube. Corolla tube, slightly bulging in the middle. Calyx lobes broadly triangular, 3 mm long, 4 mm wide, adnate to tube, green; anthers 1.5 x 1.5 mm yellow, exposed for up to 5 mm; squamae transversely oblong 0.8-1 x 3 mm, emarginate and yellowish.; Stamens 10, in two whorls, erect, yellowish-green, 15 and 25 mm respectively, fused to the tube in lower third, with a dense tuft of hairs at the point of attachment. Carpels 5, tapering to slender styles 25 mm long.
