Characteristics

Tree up to 18 m. tall; buds, twigs and leaves almost glabrous, or the twigs shortly pubescent when young, usually with a few persistent hairs up to 0.5 mm. long around the leaf-bases.. Stipules very caducous; leaf-rhachis up to 12 cm. long; petiolules 4–5 mm. long; stipellae not seen; leaflets 5–7, elliptic-lanceolate, acuminate, up to 17 cm. long by 5.5 cm. wide; principal nerves 5–6 on each side.. Inflorescence a many-flowered terminal panicle densely covered with short (up to 0.5 mm.) brown hairs; bracts oval, up to 3 mm. long, very caducous; pedicels up to 7 mm. long; bracteoles oval, up to 2 mm. long, at, or a little below, the calyx-base.. Calyx campanulate, densely covered with short appressed brown hairs; tube ± 3.5 mm. long; lobes broadly ovate, ± 1.5 mm. long.. Corolla white, 12–15 mm. long.. Filament-sheath 6–8 mm., free parts 2–4 mm., anthers 0.6 mm. long.. Ovary glabrous or with a few long hairs on the upper suture, 3-ovulate; style glabrous, 3 mm. long.. Pod up to 12 by 3.5 cm.. Seeds 1 or rarely 2, up to 20 by 15 by 8 mm.. Fig. 26/12.
