Characteristics

Biennials or annuals up to 0.3 m high when flowering, usually with one rosette with leaves spirally arranged and old ones remaining attached to stems. Leaves obovate to almost orbicular, 10-35(-40) x (10-)15-35 mm, rounded to almost truncate, dorsiventrally flattened, glabrous except for marginal cilia which are often up to 5 mm long and grouped, green to grey-green. Inflorescence a spike-like thyrse with sessile flowers but sometimes branched, with indistinct peduncle covered with leaf-like bracts gradually decreasing upwards. Calyx: lobes oblong-triangular, 2.5-3 mm long, obtuse, glabrous except for few marginal cilia, fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 1-1.5 mm, white often tinged pink; lobes oblong, 3.5-5.5 mm long, obtuse to acute, recurved. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.3-0.5 x 0.6-0.8 mm, more or less truncate, slightly constricted towards base, scarcely fleshy, pale yellow.
