Characteristics

Biennials with erect branches 50-150(-200) mm long, unbranched. Leaves lanceolate, 15-25(-30) x 8-13 mm, acute, becoming shorter below inflorescence, flat to somewhat grooved above, strongly convex below, glabrous or rarely with a few cilia towards base, grey-green to brown. Inflorescence a terminal cymose capitulum, scarcely hidden by upper leaves. Calyx: lobes narrowly oblong-oblanceolate, 3-4 mm long, rounded, with marginal cilia, fleshy and green above but somewhat thinner below. Corolla slender ampulliform, fused at base for 3-3.5 mm long, cream often tinged red; lobes narrowly oblong-oblanceolate, 9-13 mm long, with blunt beak. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae spathulate to T-shaped, 1-1.2 x 0.5-0.7 mm, truncate or slightly rounded, fleshy and red above and with a yellow almost membranous stalk. Flowering period: (June) July.
