Characteristics

Perennials with finger-like underground tubers producing each year one, rarely two or three branches which are unbranched and up to 0.4 m high, with old leaves not deciduous. Leaves sessile, oblong (varying from oblong-lanceolate below inflorescence to elliptic and oblanceolate towards base), 30-60(-80) x (5-)10-18(-25) mm, acute to obtuse, dorsiventrally flattened and cymbiform, with entire to crenulate margins, glabrous, green or glaucous. Inflorescence a flat-topped thyrse with one to several dichasia, with flowers facing upwards; peduncle resembling vegetative branches. Calyx: lobes linear-triangular, 1-3 mm long, sharply acute, glabrous, fleshy, green. Corolla star-shaped, fused at base for 0.3-0.7 mm, white or cream, sometimes tinged pink; lobes linear-lanceolate, 5-8 mm long, sharply acute, hooded and slightly ridged, spreading. Stamens with purple anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.2-0.4 x 0.6-0.8 mm, scarcely emarginate and slightly constricted downwards, slightly fleshy, pale yellow or white.
