Characteristics

Perennials up to 80 mm high, usually much branched, with branches short, rarely longer in cultivation. Leaves broadly ovate, 6-15(-20) x 6-10(-15) mm, acute or obtuse, slightly concave above and very convex below, more or less closely adpressed to stem (sometimes even the leaf apex) to form a short, 4-angled column up to 25 mm in diameter, densely covered with almost spherical papillae, grey, green or brown. Inflorescence a loose, round-topped thyrse with peduncle 20-80 mm long and covered mainly with rounded papillae. Calyx: lobes oblong-triangular, c. 1.5 mm long, bluntly acute to obtuse, covered with spreading hairs, rarely with rounded papillae, and with marginal cilia, fleshy, grey. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.3-0.5 mm, cream fading to brown; lobes oblong-elliptic, 2-2.5 mm long, acute or obtuse, spreading to recurved. Stamens with brown anthers. Squamae transversely oblong to almost square, 0.5-0.6 x 0.6-0.7 mm, usually slightly emarginate, cuneate, fleshy, yellow. Flowering period: (December) January-March.

Flowers in small, round-topped clusters, on a papillate peduncle 20-80 mm long, tubular, petals 2-2.5 mm long, fused in lower 0.5 mm, cream, fading to brown.
