Characteristics

Perennials with short branches up to 60 mm long, little branched and slightly thickened at base, with leaves deciduous. Leaves obovate-cultriform, 10-25(-35) x 6-12(-15) mm, obtuse or rounded, dorsiventrally flattened and slightly convex on both surfaces, covered with papillae with fine spherical apices but often becoming glabrous with age, green to grey-green. Inflorescence a spike-like thyrse with several dense dichasia, with leaves gradually becoming shorter below inflorescence, but leaves fall off before fruiting. Calyx: lobes triangular, 2-2.5 mm long, acute, covered with spreading hairs and marginal cilia, fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for c. 1 mm, white; lobes oblong-oblanceolate, 2.5-3.5 mm long, acute to obtuse with dorsal appendage, slightly recurved. Stamens with brown to black anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.5-0.6 x 0.7-0.9 mm, usually emarginate, slightly constricted downwards, fleshy, yellow.
