Characteristics

Perennials with erect or spreading branches rarely longer than 80 mm, with fleshy branches continued into thick tap root, more or less branched, with old leaves deciduous. Leaves narrowly to broadly rhombic to oblanceolate, 10-15(-20) x 4-10(-15) mm broad, bluntly to sharply acute, cuneate, flat to concave above and strongly convex below (often keeled), usually covered with a grey flaking layer of wax, grey-green to almost grey. Inflorescence a rounded thyrse with one to several dichasia, with peduncle not longer than 10 mm. Calyx: lobes broadly triangular, 0.5-2 mm long, obtuse, glabrous, fleshy, grey-green. Corolla urceolate and usually bulging around the squamae, fused at base for 0.3-0.4 mm, cream rarely white; lobes oblong-elliptic to oblanceolate, 3.5-5 mm long, usually with rounded apex and without dorsal appendage but often ridged, apices scarcely recurved. Stamens with black anthers. Squamae transversely oblong to almost square, 0.4-0.6 x 0.5-0.8 mm, truncate, slightly constricted downwards, somewhat fleshy, yellow.
