Characteristics

Perennials, rarely annuals, up to 100 mm high when flowering, much branched and forming dense cushions or numerous rosettes with leaves loosely spirally arranged, old leaves remaining attached to stems. Leaves linear-oblanceolate to linear-elliptic, 4-35(-45) x (0.2-)0.3-10 mm, acute or flat only on upper surface, glabrous except for marginal cilia and one stouter terminal hair per leaf, green to brown with dark spots on upper surface. Inflorescence a more or less flat-topped thyrse with 1-5 dichasia with pedicellate flowers, leaves gradually becoming shorter along indistinct erect peduncle. Calyx: lobes narrowly to broadly triangular, 2-2.5 mm long, acute and usually drawn into a stout hair, with marginal cilia sometimes reduced to teeth, fleshy but usually with membranous margin, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.2-0.8 mm, white or tinged more or less pink; lobes oblong to oblong-obovate, 3.5-4 mm long, acute, recurved. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.2-0.3 x 0.6-0.8 mm, truncate or emarginate, slightly constricted towards base, scarcely fleshy, yellow.

Calyx glabrous, fleshy but membranous margins and marginal cilia, stout terminal hair, green. Corolla tubular, fused 0.2-0.8 mm, white tinged pink; lobes oblong-obovate, 3.5-4.0 mm long, acute, recurved. Flowering time Feb.-Apr.
Perennial, consisting of cushions of many tiny rosettes, up to 0.1 m tall when flowering. Leaves sessile, linear-oblanceolate to linear-elliptic, dorsiventrally compressed, 4-35 x 0.3-10 mm, mostly glabrous, terminating in a stout hair. Flowers pedicellate, in a terminal, loosely spreading, flat-topped cluster on an indistinct, leafy bracteate, minutely hairy peduncle 10-80 mm long, tubular, petals 3.5-4 mm long, fused in lower 0.2-0.8 mm, white, often tinged pink.
