Characteristics

Perennial shrublets up to 0.4 m high, sparsely branching mainly from base, old leaves not deciduous. Leaves oblong to elliptic, rarely ovate-oblong, (20-)30-50(-70) x 4-10(-13) mm, obtuse, rarely acute, dorsiventrally flattened and slightly convex below, glabrous except for a dense row of slightly recurved marginal cilia, green to yellowish green. Inflorescence a flat-topped thyrse with few to many dichasia, peduncle often indistinct. Calyx: lobes narrowly triangular, 3.5-4.5 mm long, sharply acute and often with terminal point, glabrous, fleshy, green often tinged red. Corolla tubular, fused at base for 1-1.3 mm, white or cream; lobes oblong-oblanceolate, 6-8 mm long, acute, with subterminal dorsal appendage, strongly recurved to reflexed. Stamens with brown anthers. Squamae transversely oblong to square, 0.2-0.3 x 0.3-0.4 mm, truncate and scarcely constricted downward, slightly fleshy, yellow.
