Characteristics

Perennial shrublets up to 0.2 m high when flowering, moderately branched and with decumbent wiry branches, leaf pairs spirally arranged and old ones wearing off soon. Leaves elliptic-lanceolate, (30-)40-60(-70) x (3-)5-15(-20) mm, acute, abruptly constricted towards base, or cuneate to almost petiolate, dorsiventrally flattened and scarcely concave along main vein above, slightly fleshy, glabrous or rarely with a row of marginal cilia or teeth when young, green or yellowish green. Inflorescence a terminal flat-topped thyrse or often irregularly branched to oblong with small dichasia, with stalked flowers, usually with distinct peduncle up to 0.15 m long. Calyx: lobes linear-triangular, 1-2 mm long, acute to pointed, glabrous except for occasional marginal teeth, fleshy, red. Corolla tubular, fused basally for about 0.4 mm, white tinged pink or red, lobes lanceolate to linear-elliptic, 2-3 mm long, acute to slightly hooded, spreading and later reflexed. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae transversely oblong to almost square, 0.2-0.4 x 0.4-0.5 mm, usually somewhat emarginate, slightly constricted towards base, fleshy, white to pale yellow. Flowering period: March, April, (May).
