Characteristics

Perennials forming shrublets up to 0.4ú m high, sparsely branched mainly from base, with old leaves not deciduous. Leaves lanceolate, rarely ovate or linear-lanceolate, 40-90(-150) x 8-15 mm, usually acute but often drying up from apices, concave to almost flat above, convex below, serrulate when young becoming smooth later, usually brownish red rarely greyish green. Inflorescence a rounded to somewhat elongated thyrse with sessile flowers, with peduncle 10-30 mm long, often half hidden by leaves below. Calyx: lobes lanceolate, 2-3 mm long. glabrous or sometimes with widely spaced pointed marginal teeth, fleshy, brown. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.2-0.4 mm, whjte or cream; lobes elliptic lanceolate, 4-5 mm long, acute to somewhat hooded, recurved. Stamens with black anthers. Squamae oblong, 0.6-0.8 x 0.3-0.4 mm, almost truncate, first abruptly constricted below apex then gradually tapering towards base, fleshy, yellow.
