Characteristics

Perennials with usually few erect stems up to 0.2 m high, more or less branched but mainly from base, with old leaves scarcely shrivelling and remaining attached to stems. Leaves linear-lanceolate, (15-)20-80 x 3-6(-8) mm, acute, more or less triangular in section, usually widely spaced with internodes visible, glabrous, hairy or covered with rounded papillae, green to grey-green, brown to orange-red. Inflorescence a round-topped thyrse with peduncle 20-100 (-150) mm long and covered with recurved hairs. Calyx: lobes oblong-triangular, 1-1.5 mm long, acute to obtuse, covered with fine or coarse hairs, rarely with rounded trichomes, with marginal cilia, very fleshy, green to red. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.2-0.3 mm, cream fading to brown; lobes oblong-elliptic 2-3 mm long, usually obtuse, spreading to slightly recurved. Stamens with brown anthers. Squamae usually oblong, rarely square, 0.7-1 x 0.5-0.7 mm, emarginate, cuneate, fleshy, yellow to orange. Flowering period: (January) February-April.
