Characteristics

Perennials with decumbent or scrambling branches rarely longer than 0.6 m, sparsely branched mainly from base, with old leaves not deciduous. Leaves with petioles up to 15 mm long on lower leaves but leaves below inflorescence sessile; lamina broadly elliptic or elliptic-ovate, 20-50(-80) x 15-30(-50) mm (becoming larger towards apex of branches), acuminate to cuspidate on lower leaves which have a cuneate base, and obtuse and abruptly constricted towards base in upper ones, usually with irregularly crenate margin which is recurved, dorsiventrally flattened, dark green above and lighter below. Inflorescence a rounded thyrse with one to several dichasia, often half hidden by leaves below, with peduncle 10-30 mm long. Calyx: lobes ovate-oblong,1-2 mm long, with very much swollen apices so that they appear recurved, glabrous, green. Corolla star-shaped, scarcely fused at base, cream rarely white; lobes linear-lanceolate, 3.5-5(-6) mm long, acute to pointed, ridged and scarcely hooded, spreading at about right angles to pedicles. Stamens with white anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.3-0.4 x 0.5-0.8 mm, scarcely emarginate, little constricted towards the base, fleshy, white to pale yellow.
