Characteristics

Perennial shrublets up to 0.4 m high, usually with upper branches erect and lower ones often wiry and decumbent, with old leaves deciduous. Leaves obovate, (8-)10-20(-25) x 4-7 mm, rounded, falcate and somewhat turned to one side of stem, dorsiventrally flattened and slightly convex on both surfaces but with sharp margins, puberulous to glabrous, green to yellowish green and often with red horny margins. Inflorescence a dense almost capitate thyrse with 1-3 globular dichasia (i.e. produced from one node of central axis), with peduncle 0.15-0.25 m long, puberulous to glabrous, with obovate to broadly oblong bracts covering at least lower part of inflorescence. Calyx: lobes oblong-triangular, 2-2.5 mm long, with rounded apices often very much swollen so that they appear to be recurved, puberulous, green to yellowish green. Corolla tubular to almost cylindrical, fused basally for 0.5-0.8 mm, cream; lobes oblong-oblanceolate, 3-3.5 mm long, with elongate-ellipsoid dorsal appendage in terminal position and with short swollen petal apex on inside. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae oblong-cuneate, 0.6-0.8 x 0.4-0.5 mm, truncate or slightly emarginate, slightly fleshy, yellow. Flowering period: February-May (June).
