Characteristics

Perennials with one to few dense rosettes with leaves spirally arranged and with old leaves not deciduous. Leaves wedge-shaped to almost obpyramidal, 10-20 x 3-6 mm, usually as thick as broad to almost triangular in section, truncate, gradually tapering towards base, covered with small, hard, round papillae mainly on exposed surfaces and often clearly clustered around hydathodes, green to brown, or grey-green when covered with papillae. Inflorescence a round-topped compact dichasium partially hidden by leaves below, with flowers usually shortly pedicellate, with peduncle 6-20 mm long, with few recurved hairs. Calyx: lobes oblong-triangular, 2.5-3.5 mm long, rounded or bluntly acute, with few short scattered hairs towards apices and with spreading marginal cilia, fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.6-1 mm, white to cream; lobes narrowly oblong, 5-6(-7) mm long, each somewhat hooded and with dorsal appendage indistinct. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae oblong-cuneate, 0.8-1.2 x 0.5-0.7 mm, emarginate, slightly fleshy, pale yellow to white.
