Characteristics

Perennial 40-60 mm high, usually branched. Leaves narrowly triangular, 3-5(-6) x 2-3 mm, of about equal length, arranged in whorls or rarely in a spiral along whole plant, with marginal cilia towards base, leathery, green to brown. Inflorescence a terminal cymose capitulum partly hidden by upper leaves. Calyx: lobes narrowly oblanceolate, 2-3 mm long, rounded at apices, with marginal cilia towards base, fleshy above and membranous below, green to brown. Corolla slender ampulliform, fused at base for c. 2 mm, cream to pale yellow; lobes narrowly elliptic-oblong, 5-8 mm long, each with a blunt beak, often tinged red in bud. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae spathulate to T-shaped, 1-1.2 x 0.4-0.6 mm, truncate, abruptly constricted and with a stalk two thirds of the total length, slightly fleshy at apex, yellow.
