Characteristics

Perennials forming fastigiate shrublets up to 0.25 m high, usually much branched, branches covered with short recurved adpressed hairs when young and with rough flaking bark when old, old leaves deciduous. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to elliptic, 3-6 x c. 1 mm, obtuse or acute, flat to slightly convex above and usually strongly convex below, covered with minute papillae and with few short scattered cilia, becoming glabrous with age, green. Inflorescence an irregular thyrse with one or several cymose clusters of usually sessile flowers. Calyx: lobes narrowly triangular, 2.5(-3) mm long, subulate, covered with minute papillae becoming glabrous, green or often yellowish green. Corolla urn-shaped, fused basally for c. 0.8 mm, white to pale yellow; lobes panduriform, 3-3.5 mm long, drawn into a blunt fleshy point without dorsal appendage, scarcely recurved. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae oblong-cuneate, 0.6-1 x 0.3-0.4 mm, truncate or slightly emarginate, fleshy, yellow to orange.
