Characteristics

Perennials or biennials up to 0.4 m high when flowering, with one, rarely few rosettes, with leaf pairs spirally arranged, old ones remaining attached to stems, sometimes with thickened stems but not with tuberous root stock. Leaves obovate, rarely elliptic, (10-)15-60 x 5-15(-20) mm, usually abruptly tapering into blunt apices and often drying up from apex, dorsiventrally flattened, glabrous except for marginal cilia which are often swollen towards their apex, green often tinged red. Inflorescence a round-topped thyrse often divided into a number of rounded part-inflorescences with pedicellate flowers, peduncle covered with leaf-like bracts gradually decreasing upwards. Calyx: lobes tria ngular, 1-2.5 m m long, acute and often drawn into a stout hair, glabrous or with a few marginal teeth, slightly fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for c. 0.5 mm, white tinged pink to almost red; lobes oblong to elliptic, 2-3 mm long, rounded and slightly hooded, recurved from about the middle. Stamens with reddish brown anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.2-0.3 x 0.5-0.7 mm, usually truncate, constricted downwards, slightly fleshy, yellow.
