Characteristics

Perennials with erect to decumbent branches up to 0.3 m long and often somewhat woody at base, with one to several rosettes visible when young or during resting stage, with leaf pairs more or less four ranked and old ones usually remaining attached to stems. Leaves elliptic, lanceolate or ovate to oblanceolate, (5-)10-30(-40) x (3-)5-10(-17) mm, acute or obtuse, glabrous, glabrescent or covered with adpressed hairs and with erect or recurved cilia, dorsiventrally compressed to almost terete, green or often tinged red or reddish brown. Inflorescence a flat-topped to elongate thyrse sometimes with sessile dichasia with usually many pedicellate flowers, with peduncle more or less indistinct and covered with leaf-like bracts becoming shorter upwards. Calyx: lobes narrowly triangular, 3-5 mm long, acute and more or less drawn into a sharp, usually recurved terminal hair, glabrous, hairy or only with marginal cilia, fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.5-1 mm, white or cream, rarely tinged pink; lobes oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 5-7 mm long, pointed or acute, with more or less recurved apices. Stamens with purple anthers. Squamae transversely oblong to almost square, 0.2-0.4 x 0.3-0.6 mm, entire or emarginate, slightly constricted downwards, somewhat fleshy, yellow.
