Characteristics

Perennial shrublets up to 0.15 m high, branches short, decumbent, often rooting where touching ground, much branched, old leaves not deciduous. Leaves oblong to oblong-lanceolate, (5-)8-15(-20) x 2-3(-4) mm, rounded, rarely acute, dorsiventrally flattened to somewhat convex on lower surface, erect, glabrous except for more or less ciliate margins, green to brown or red. Inflorescence a more or less loose dichasium with 1-5 flowers each with a pedicel 2-8 mm long, with peduncle more or less distinct. Calyx: lobes lanceolate. 10-l5 mm long, usually of different lengths, acute, with short marginal cilia, slightly fleshy, green often tinged red. Corolla tubular, fused at base for 9-12 mm, white often tinged pink or red and usually becoming even deeper red with age; lobes narrowly spathulate, 30-40(-45) mm long, pointed, with recurved parts up to 4 mm broad. Stamens with black anthers. Squamae narrowly oblong, 1-1.2 x 0.1-0.2 mm, rounded or truncate, slightly fleshy, pale yellow. Flowering period: November-January (February).
