Characteristics

Annuals with a very condensed stem which is partly fused to the leaf bases so as to form a dorsiventrally flattened crust-like body. Leaves sessile, angular-obovate to spathulate, 2-5 x 1.5-3 mm, obtuse, more or less cuneate, dorsiventrally flattened but slightly convex above, minutely papillose, slightly fleshy, green to yellow. Inflorescence a thyrse apparently reduced to a single terminal dichasium, with sessile 4-merous flowers partly fused to the central axis. Calyx: lobes obovate-oblong, 0.5-1 mm long, obtuse, minutely papillose towards apices and along margins, slightly fleshy, green to red. Corolla cup-shaped, scarcely fused basally, brown to red; lobes oblong-lanceolate, 1.2-2 mm, obtuse, erect. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae oblong-oblanceolate, 0.6-0.8 x 0.1-0.2 mm, with rounded apices, slightly constricted downwards, membranous, usually pale red. Seeds 8-16, retained in indehiscent pericarp.
