Characteristics

Perennials up to 0.2 m high when flowering, with one to several rosettes with leaves in four ranks and adpressed to one another, old leaves remaining attached to stem. Lea ves obovate to orbicular, 8-30(-45) x 10-35(-50) mm, usually acuminate or mucronate, dorsiventrally flattened, scarcely fleshy, glabrous except for a dense row of recurved cilia, green to yellowish green to brown and usually with red spots. Inflorescence an elongate thyrse, or rarely spike-like, usually with many dichasia with pedicellate flowers, with distinct peduncle 0.05-0.25 m long. Calyx: lobes oblong-triangular, 2-3 mm long, with rounded apices, glabrous except for a dense row of cilia, somewhat fleshy, green to brownish red. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.4-0.6 mm, pale yellow often tinged brownish red; lobes oblong to oblanceolate, 3-4 mm long, acute, spreading to recurved. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae transversely oblong-cuneate, 0.5-1 x 0.4-0.6 mm, truncate, emarginate or irregularly toothed, scarcely fleshy, yellow. Flowering period: September-October (November).
