Characteristics

A glabrous erect annual herb.. Stems simple or branching mainly in the lower half, up to 22.5 cm. long, terete, ± 1.5 mm. in diameter, distinctly 4-winged when dry.. Leaves sessile, linear or linear-lanceolate, 5–8.5 mm. long, ± 2 mm. wide, apex obtuse or subtruncate, bases of opposite leaves united to form a shallow non-saccate sheath 0.5 mm. high.. Flowers (4–)5-merous, axillary, 2 per axil, axils in turn may develop short leafy flowering branches; inflorescence distinctly shorter than the subtending leaf; pedicels up to 2 mm. long.. Calyx-lobes linear-lanceolate, up to 2 mm. long, ± 0.3 mm. wide, attenuate-subulate, shortly connate at the base, pale green, thinly membranous.. Petals lanceolate, ± 1 mm. long, ± 0.4 mm. wide, long-attenuate, white or pink, thinly membranous.. Stamen-filaments ± 0.5–0.7 mm. long; anthers suborbicular, up to ± 0.15 mm. long, yellow.. Nectary scales shortly cuneate, ± 0.2 mm. long, ± 0.5 mm. wide.. Carpels obliquely obovoid, ± 1 mm. long, translucent, contracted into a very short style.. Seeds 2 per carpel, oblong, 0.5 mm. long, yellow, shallowly longitudinally ribbed; under S.E.M. surface consists of longitudinal cells with conspicuously crenate-sinuate interlocking walls.
More
Leaves 5-8·5 mm. long, linear or linear-lanceolate, usually with nearly the same breadth from base to apex, the cauline and rameal ones blunt or truncate at the apex which is provided with ± numerous short papillae, entire, sessile and connate at the base into a sheath up to 0·5 mm. long, not spurred below their insertion with the stem; axillary-fascicles distinctly shorter than the subtending leaf.
Stems up to 22·5 cm. long, ± 1 mm. in diam., soft, distinctly 4-winged (at least when dried), whitish to pale green, the wings hyaline, simple or branched sometimes from the base (the branches ascending or erect, shorter than the main stem), leafy nearly from the base to the apex or leafless below; internodes usually longer than the leaves, the lower and median ones up to 14 mm. long.
Corolla 0·6-1 mm. long, white or pale pink, thinly membranous, hyaline to brownish on drying; petals ovate-lanceolate or ovate, folded above the middle and thus attenuate and cuspidate, nearly free, stellate.
Flowers (4)5-merous in 2-7-flowered axillary fascicles nearly along all the stem and branches or sometimes flowers solitary; pedicels up to 3·5 mm. long, very unequal in length in each fascicle, filamentose.
Calyx 1-2 mm. long, ± longer than the corolla, pale green or whitish; sepals oblong-lanceolate, attenuate-subulate to the apex which is acute or nearly so, very thin, stellate.
Seeds c. 0·5 x 0·22 mm., oblong, obtuse at base and apex, shallowly longitudinally ridged, the ridges straight, not shining.
Follicles ± 0·75 mm., obliquely obovoid, contracted into the very short styles, pale green, nearly translucent, 2-seeded.
Filaments ± attaining the middle of the corolla; anthers c. 0·15 mm., subcircular, yellow.
