Characteristics

Annuals with decumbent, sometimes prostrate branches 10-40 mm long, often with adventitious roots at nodes, covered with fine papillae when young. Leaves with petiole up to 1 mm long at base of plant; lamina obovate, 1-2(-3) x 1-2 mm, obtuse to sometimes truncate, with fine papillae, at least when young, dorsiventrally flattened but slightly convex above, fleshy, green to red. Inflorescence a thyrse with few dichasia, with shortly pedicelled, 4-merous flowers. Calyx: lobes broadly ovate, c. 1.5 mm long, obtuse, fleshy, green to red. Corolla more or less cup-shaded, scarcely fused basally, white; lobes ovate, 1.5-2 mm long, obtuse, spreading. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae transversely oblong-cuneate, 0.3-0.4 x 0.6-0.8 mm, truncate, abruptly constricted downwards, slightly fleshy, white. Seeds 6-8, released through apical pore of follicle.
