Characteristics

Perennial shrublets up to 0.3 m high, much branched, old leaves rarely deciduous. Leaves oblanceolate-cultrate, (10-)15-25(-35) x 5-10(-13) mm, obtuse, flat or almost so above and somewhat convex below, glabrous except for recurved marginal cilia which are often worn off near apex, green, with or without red margin becoming deep red. Inflorescence a round-topped thyrse with few to many dichasia, often with indistinct peduncle. Calyx: lobes triangular, 2.5-3 mm long, sharply acute, often with teeth along margin, fleshy, green to red. Corolla tubular, fused at base for 0.8-1 mm, white to more or less tinged red; lobes oblong-ovate, 4-5.5 mm long, acute, with subterminal dorsal appendage, recurved to reflexed later. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.3-0.4 x 0.4-0.6 mm, usually slightly emarginate, and more or less constricted downwards, fleshy, yellow.
