Perennial herbs, erect, sprawling or lycopodium-like; stems succulent to almost woody especially at the base, up to 5 mm. in diameter; bark dark brown to reddish brown, peeling irregularly; remains of dead leaves usually present below new growth.. Leaves sessile, lanceolate to ovate, linear or triangular, up to 12 mm. long, up to 3 mm. wide, apex acute or obtuse, sometimes setose, base sometimes spurred, bases of opposite leaves united to form a sheath around the stem up to 2 mm. high, margins thickened and sometimes with marginal papillae; blade flat, thin to thick and fleshy; hydathodes sometimes large and conspicuous.. Inflorescence of condensed axillary cymes, shorter than to subequalling or rarely exceeding the subtending leaf; flowers (1–)3–12, (4–)5-merous; pedicels short.. Leaves not to ± succulent, soft to ± rigid, ovate to linear, obtuse or acute, sometimes setose at the apex, sessile, connate at the base into a short sheath, slightly thickened and indexed at the margin, ± canaliculate above towards the apex, the apical ones ± dense.
Calyx slightly shorter or longer than the corolla or subequalling it; sepals lanceolate, acute to rather attenuate and nearly subulate, thin to somewhat thick, nearly hyaline to whitish or pale green, shortly connate at the base.
Stems ± woody towards the base or herbaceous throughout, 4-gonous above, either slender or somewhat thick throughout or only below, leafy from base to apex or leafless on the older parts.
Corolla whitish, yellowish or rose, turning reddish-brown on drying; petals oblong or ovate-oblong, connate at base up to 0·5 mm., folded upwards and appearing cuspidate there.
Flowers 5-merous, small, shortly pedicellate, in ± dense axillary fascicles shorter than to equalling or a little exceeding the subtending leaf, sometimes flowers solitary.
Moss-or lycopodium-like perennial herbs or sometimes dwarf undershrubs, totally glabrous or sometimes papillose on leaves, calyces and extremities of stem and branches.
Follicles 0·75-1 mm. long, contracted or shortly attenuate into a very short style.
Scales flabellate to spathulate.
Seeds 2 in each follicle.
