Characteristics

Perennials forming shrublets up to 0.4 m high, usually sparsely branched and often only with a few decumbent or scrambling branches, with old leaves not deciduous. Leaves ovate, 25-40(-60) x 15-25(-35) mm, with rounded somewhat pointed apex, slightly convex on both surfaces, with sharply toothed margin when young, dull green to glaucous, with yellowish or red margin. Inflorescence a rounded to almost flat-topped thyrse, with peduncle rarely longer than 20 mm and with flowers just above leaves. Calyx: lobes lanceolate, 1-2 mm long, acute, ridged and fleshy, glabrous, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.8-1 mm, white often tinged pink; lobes oblong-elliptic, 4-5 mm long, rounded and recurved. Stamens with black anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.4-0.5 x 0.6-0.8 mm, truncate or slightly emarginate, gradually constricted downwards, slightly fleshy, yellow.
