Characteristics

Perennials up to 60 mm high when flowering, forming cushions of numerous rosettes each with 4-ranked leaves, old leaves remaining attached to stems. Leaves ovate or elliptic, 4-7(-10) x 4-6 mm, acuminate, dorsiventrally flattened, slightly fleshy, glabrous except for dense row of marginal cilia, green or often tinged red towards margins. Inflorescence a more or less rounded thyrse with 1-3 dichasia usually with sessile flowers, with distinct peduncle 30-60 mm long. Calyx: lobes ovate-triangular, 1-1.5 mm long, with rounded apices, glabrous or with few marginal cilia, fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.2-0.3 mm, white; lobes oblong-obovate, 2-2.5 mm long, obtuse, spreading and scarcely recurved. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae narrowly oblong, 0.6-0.7 x 0.1-0.2 mm, truncate or slightly emarginate, constricted downwards, scarcely fleshy, pale yellow or yellowish green. Carpels with short reflexed styles. Flowering period: (August) September, October.
