Annuals or perennials with erect or decumbent branches, often somewhat woody towards base, up to 0.25 m long, leaf pairs spirally arranged, old leaves, remaining attached to stems. Leaves triangular, 4-10(-15) x 2-4 mm, subulate and tapering into a stout terminal hair 1-2 mm long, glabrous except for stout marginal cilia which often broaden towards apex, dorsiventrally compressed, leathery, green or grey-green. Inflorescence a round-topped thyrse with one to several dichasia with many shortly pedicellate flowers, often half hidden by leaves below, with indistinct peduncle covered with leaf-like bracts which become scarcely shorter below inflorescence. Calyx: lobes triangular, 1.5-3.5 mm long, often varying in length on same flower, acute and each tapering into a stout hair, glabrous, fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.3-0.8 mm, cream or white; lobes oblong to oblanceolate, 2-3 mm long, abruptly rounded and somewhat hooded, erect. Stamens with brown anthers. Squamae oblong to square, 0.3-0.8 x 0.2-0.6 mm, truncate or slightly emarginate, gradually constricted downwards, scarcely fleshy, pale yellow.
