Characteristics

Perennials, usually much branched with a number of rosettes with leaves more or less 4-ranked and usually only with their upper margin appearing above soil level; old leaves not deciduous. Leaves, oblong, 6-10 x 4-mm, truncate, sometimes slightly constricted towards base, dorsiventrally compressed and slightly convex below, obscurely folded along central vein, smooth except for exposed apices, covered with minute papillae which are globular towards apex, rarely with swollen recurved hairs, green to grey-green, rarely brown. Inflorescence a few-flowered cymose capitulum with sessile flowers, with peduncle 10-30 mm long and with short recurved and almost adpressed hairs. Calyx: lobes oblong-triangular, 1.5-2 mm long, bluntly acute, with spreading and slightly recurved hairs and marginal cilia, fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for 0.2-0.3 mm, white; lobes oblong-oblanceolate, 2.5-3.5 mm long, acute, each with dorsal ridge and indistinct dorsal appendage. Stamens with black anthers. Squamae oblong-cuneate, 0.8-1 x 0.3-0.5 mm, truncate, scarcely fleshy, orange.
