Perennials or annuals up to 0.3 m high when flowering, with one to several rosettes with leaf pairs spirally arranged, old leaves remaining attached to stems. Leaves lanceolate to ovate, 10-35(-45) x 5-15 mm, acute or sometimes acuminate, dorsiventrally flattened but slightly keeled along main vein slightly fleshy, glabrous except for a dense row of marginal cilia, green to brown often with darker spots above. Inflorescence spike-like with numerous sessile or slightly stalked dichasia with sessile flowers with indistinct peduncle covered with 1eaf-like bracts gradually decreasing.in length upwards. Calyx: lobes triangular, (1.5-)2-3 mm long, sharply acute and each drawn into a stout terminal hair, glabrous except for more or less well developed marginal cilia, slightly fleshy, green. Corolla tubular, fused basally for c. 0.5 mm, white, rarely tinged pmk; lobes oblong to oblong-obovate, 2-4.5 mm long, obtuse or rounded, reflexed. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.2-0.3 x 0.6-0.8 mm, truncate or slightly emarginate, more or less constricted downwards, scarcely fleshy, yellow.
