Characteristics

Annuals with stiff erect branches up to 100 mm high, glabrous, usually with two pairs of leaves below the inflorescence scarcely separated by an internode. Leaves sessile, elliptic to obovate, 6-12(-15) x (3-)4-6 mm, obtuse, abruptly constricted towards base, almost membranous, green. Inflorescence a thyrse with rarely more than 3 dichasia, with pedicellate 5-merous flowers. Calyx: lobes lanceolate to almost elliptic, 0.7-1 mm long, obtuse but usually with a terminal point, glabrous, very fleshy, green. Corolla cup-shaped, scarcely fused basally, white, lobes narrowly oblong-elliptic, c. 1 mm long, acute, spreading. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae narrowly T-shaped, 0.2-0.3 x 0.5-0.6 mm, truncate, slightly fleshy, white. Seeds 2, rarely 1, with one partially sunk into fleshy receptacle.
