Characteristics

Annuals with decumbent, rarely erect branches up to 80 mm long, often rooting at nodes, glabrous. Leaves sessile, lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 2-6(-8) x 1-1.5 mm, with blunt apices covered with blister-like papillae, flat above, usually strongly convex below, fleshy, yellowish green to brownish red. Inflorescence a thyrse, usually with many dichasia sessile or distinctly stalked, with pedicellate 5-merous flowers. Calyx: lobes lanceolate, up to 1 mm long, with blunt apex usually covered with blister-like papillae, fleshy, green to brown. Corolla more or less cup-shaped, scarcely fused basally, white turning brown; lobes oblong-lanceolate, c. 1 mm long, sharply acute and often folded lengthwise, spreading. Squamae T-shaped, 0.2-0.3 x 0.1-0.2 mm, truncate or usually somewhat rounded towards apex, white to red. Seeds 2, released through apical pore and by basal circumscissile split.
