Characteristics

Perennials with erect stems 50-110 mm high, usually unbranched. Leaves in 3(4) pairs, with petioles up to 10 mm long and usually on lower leaves only; lamina obovate or elliptic, rarely orbicular, 20-35 x 15-25 mm, obtuse, more or less abruptly cuneate, with teeth often sharply pointed, glabrous, scarcely fleshy, usually yellowish green. Inflorescence a terminal loosely branched thyrse with 5-merous flowers, with peduncle (0-)20-30 mm long. Calyx: lobes triangular, 1-2 mm long, rounded, glabrous, scarcely fleshy, green. Corolla star-shaped and scarcely fused at base, white or cream; lobes lanceolate, 2.5-4 mm long, sharply acute. Stamens with yellow anthers. Squamae almost square, 0.3-0.4 x 0.3-0.5 mm, more or less emarginate, slightly constricted downwards, scarcely fleshy, yellow.
