Characteristics

Annuals rarely up to 0.15 m high, with branches erect or decumbent, more or less branched and often producing adventitious roots where branches touch ground. Leaves linear, 2-4(-6) x 1-2 mm, obtuse or acute, more or less flat above and convex below, often shorter in lower parts than towards apex, glabrous, fleshy, green to brown or deep red. Inflorescence with terminal flower, rarely up to 3 flowers, in axil of a leaf due to sympodial growth, with 4-merous flowers. Calyx: lobes broadly triangular, 0.2-0.4 mm long, obtuse. Corolla more or less cup-shaped, scarcely fused at base, white or tinged red; lobes ovate to elliptic, 1.2-2 mm long, obtuse, recurved from about the middle. Stamens with purple anthers. Squamae oblong-cuneate, 0.4-0.7 x 0.1-0.3 mm, slightly rounded, gradually constricted downwards, slightly fleshy, yellow to red. Flowering period: September-January, but flowers can be found throughout the year if conditions are favourable.
