Characteristics

A perennial, sessile to very short stemmed, distichous succulent herb reaching 40-45 cm in height when flowering with plants budding off at the base of the parent. Leaves grey-green, hairy, with clusters of retrorse hairs occurring densely scattered on both upper and lower surfaces interspersed by interstices of sparse, very short hairs; asymmetrical, oblong, obovate to round, flat above and convex below, apices rounded to barely bluntly acute with a sharp reddish, margin, the latter with short recurved cilia. The inflorescence is a purplish tomentose pedunculate thyrse with branched subinflorescences present at 2-3 nodes. Bracts present at 3-7 nodes along the peduncle below the inflorescence, brown and pubescent, opposite, ovate, bluntly acute with ciliate margins; the angle between paired bracts acute. Flowers tubular, up to 5 mm long, white. Calyx 1/2 to 2/3 length of flower, with purplish, convex lanceolate hairy lobes fused at the base for about 1.9 mm, the hairs markedly longer around the base of the calyx, margins of lobes with elongate, laterally to upward directed cilia, which decrease in length apically. Petals panduriform with an elongate canaliculate appendage, green and papillose dorsally with white membranous margins; the appendages, white and grooved with horny margins. Anthers yellow. Carpels pyriform, with very short, slightly recurved styles and dorsolateral stigmas. Nectary approximately twice as long as wide, oblong to slightly cuneate, entire to slightly emarginate, translucent pale yellow.
