Perennial herb with a rosette of radical leaves and one or more erect unbranched or less often once-branched flowering stem(s) 2–30(–38) cm high, bearing few short linear cauline leaves; stem ribbed, hollow, with white latex, glabrous or with sparse dark glandular setae on the ribs, distally (rarely all over) with some short white pubescence; root thick, sometimes divided.. Leaves: radical leaves appressed to the ground, oblanceolate or narrowly obovate, 2–10(–15) cm long, 0.3–2.5 cm wide, base attenuate, margins subentire to recurved-dentate to pinnately lobed, apex rounded and mucronate, glabrous or with sparse hairs on midrib and veins; cauline leaves few or sometimes absent, linear, 1–3 cm long, 1–2 mm wide (larger and more like basal leaves at branching point in 2-headed plants), the most proximal sometimes with a few teeth, attenuate, glabrous or with sparse dark setae.. Capitula solitary, less often in pairs; involucre 7–14 mm long; phyllaries lanceolate, the outer 3–4 mm long, the inner 7–14 mm long, acute, proximally with short white pubescence, along the midrib subglabrous or with sparse to dense black glandular setae..
