Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Crepis

Characteristics

Perennial herb 0.1–1.2 m high, with most leaves in a rosette; flowering stem(s) usually 1, erect or weak, sometimes rather woody.. Leaves appressed to the ground or erect, dull to bright green, sessile, narrowly obovate or oblanceolate, 4–18(–38) cm long, 1–4(–7.5) cm wide, base attenuate, margins dentate to coarsely recurved-dentate, less often denticulate or pinnately lobed, apex acute or rounded and mucronate, glabrous or sparsely glandular-setose beneath, sometimes the indument restricted to midrib and veins, occasionally densely setose when young; cauline leaves absent or smaller than radical ones; midrib pallid.. Capitula erect, 2–15(–54) in lax corymbs; stalks of individual capitula sparsely pilose or glandular-setose, distally also short-pubescent; involucre 7.5–17 mm long; phyllaries pale to dark green, lanceolate, 2.5–17 mm, obtuse or acute, with scattered to dense dark or pale setae and usually short-pubescent at least proximally, sometimes glandular, usually restricted to the midrib, distally glabrous or setose, the inner phyllaries with pale scarious margins and often keeled and spongy near the base.. Corolla bright yellow, the ligules rarely reddish beneath, tube cylindric, 3.5–6 mm long, (sparsely) pilose, ligule 6–14.5 mm long, 1–2.5 mm wide.. Achenes brown to orange-red, cylindrical becoming fusiform, (2–3 mm at anthesis) 6–10 mm long, distally tapered but not beaked, rarely slightly beaked, finely ribbed, the ribs antrorsely muricate; pappus 4.5–9 mm long, barbellate.. Fig. 17/1–3.
More
Leaves mostly radical in a rosette, usually c. 10 x 2 cm. sometimes up to c. 36 x 6 cm., oblanceolate-spathulate, acute or rounded mucronate at the apex, narrowly cuneate below, ± coarsely recurved-dentate on the margins, less often denticulate or lobed, glabrous, or sparsely glandular-setose beneath, midribs usually ± densely setose; cauline leaves when present smaller and linear-lanceolate.
Phyllaries few-seriate, becoming swollen at the base, glabrous outside or puberulent, sometimes dark glandular-setulose on the midribs; the outer 2–6 x 0.5–1 mm. and subulate, extending briefly onto the capitulum stalk; the inner up to c. 12 x 1.5 mm. becoming linear-lanceolate.
Achenes brown ripening to a bright orange-red, 4.5–7 x 0.5–0.75 mm., subterete, tapering above but not drawn out into a beak, finely uniformly ribbed, ribs antrorsely muricate; pappus of numerous, barbellate setae, up to 6 mm. long.
Flowering stalks erect often solitary, branching above, markedly striate, usually glabrous, sometimes sparsely glandular-setulose becoming hispid.
Capitula erect, few to many in corymbose clusters on the branches; stalks 0.3–4 cm. long, ± densely pubescent.
An erect subscapose perennial herb, up to c. 90 cm. tall from a large semi-woody rootstock.
Corollas yellow, up to c. 15 mm. long; ligule c. 10 x 2.5 mm., strap-shaped.
Involucres obovoid in bud, ± cylindric later.
