Characteristics

Plant lacking pseudostem. Leaves several, lorate, basal, weak and spreading, 30–80 cm long, 1–5 cm wide; margin slightly rough. Inflorescence to 75 cm long, with 5–16 but usually 7–14 flowers; bracts membranous to papery, to 16 cm long; pedicels 1.5–7 cm but usually 2–4 cm long. Flowers with strong, frequently unpleasant scent. Perianth tube 2–11 cm but usually 4–8 cm long; lobes elliptic to obovate, 3.5–10 cm long, 0.5–2 cm wide, spreading, white, cream or yellow. Stamens with filaments 2.5–5.5 cm long, pink or purple; anthers 4–12 mm long, crescent-shaped to semicircular, yellow. Beak absent or to 1 cm long.

The flowers are white or pink. The flowers are produced in umbrella like heads. There are 6-14 flowers on a flattened stalk 30-70 cm long. The anthers in the flower are purple and strongly curved. The fruit is a capsule which is green and round. It is 1-3 cm across.
