Characteristics

Bulb 10–25 cm. in diameter, often with a considerable neck up to 30 cm. long.. Leaves very variable in length, 10–130 cm. at anthesis, without a distinct midrib or keel, slightly to markedly undulate and scabrous on the margin, withering back to the neck every dry season, all but a few outer ones growing out again next rainy season without an intact apex (appearing burnt or grazed), lorate, 2–10 cm. broad, the 2–3 new inner leaves narrow and erect, obtuse.. Scapes 1–3, 10–60 cm. long, usually contemporary with the leaves.. Spathe-valves papery, withering early.. Flowers 4–20, often heavily scented, subsessile or with pedicels up to 6.5 cm. long.. Perianth-tube greenish to brownish crimson, curved, 7–15 cm. long; segments white, with pink to rose, dull crimson or red midrib on the back (rarely ‘albino’ with faint green midrib), broadly lanceolate to elliptic, acute to acuminate, 7–13 cm. long, 2–4 cm. broad, the inner ones always broader than the outer, together forming a bell, with apical parts reflexed at anthesis.. Filaments white, declinate; anthers dark grey to black, curved, ± 1 cm. long.. Style white, with pink distal part, declinate.. Fruits green, fading to dull yellow, with thin pericarp closely investing the seeds, giving an irregular undulate surface, often distinctly beaked by the remains of the perianth-tube.. Seeds greenish, covered with a silvery to grey water repellent membrane making them very smooth, (5–) 20–80, variable in shape and size, often flattened, largest diameter rarely more than 2 cm., viviparous.. Fruit an indehiscent, subglobose, beaked capsule.
Perennial geophyte, up to 0.5-1.2 m high. Leaves spreading or arched from a short, stem-like base, 20-160 mm wide, channelled, flaccid, grey-green, margins ± undulate, with short cartilaginous hairs. Flowers 8-25, in a lax cluster, zygomorphic, widely trumpet-shaped; perianth tube curved, 30-110 mm long, segments 70-110 mm long, white with a deep pink keel, turning brown when old.
