Characteristics

Bulb 12–20 cm. in diameter, often with a distinct neck.. Leaves spreading on the ground, glossy, lorate, the outer ones 8–19 cm. broad and up to 90 cm. long at anthesis, without midrib or keel, distinctly ciliate, not undulate; growth rhythm as C. macowanii.. Scapes 1–3, 25–65 cm. long, always contemporary with the leaves.. Spathe-valves membranous, drooping at anthesis.. Inflorescence 10–21-flowered.. Pedicels 2–7.5 cm. long.. Perianth-tube red, 8–12 cm. long, curved; segments with a red to purplish central part fading into white or pink near the margin, linear to narrowly lanceolate, acute to acuminate, 7.5–12.5 cm. long, the outer 1–1.7 cm. broad, the inner 1.2–2 cm. broad, all connivent to a funnel, normally with the apical part distinctly reflexed.. Filaments white to pink, declinate; anthers yellow to light brown, curved and ±5 mm. long at anthesis.. Style deep rose.. Fruit vivid orange to deep red, globose to ovoid, usually without a beak, 4–6 (–13) cm. in diameter; pericarp thick, spongy inside, glossy outside.. Seeds 3–20, globose or somewhat flattened, largest diameter up to 2 cm., light green, covered with a silvery to grey, smooth water-repellent membrane.. Fig. 4.
