Characteristics

Plants 1500-2000(-2500) mm high. Corm globose, 30-50 mm diam., old corms persisting under current one; tunics of unbroken papery layers, becoming fibrous with age. Stem erect or inclined, 4-to 7-branched, lower branches sometimes 1-or 2-branched. Leaves several, in basal fan, reaching to ± base of spike, lanceolate, pleated, firm, up to 35 mm wide. Spikes drooping in bud, becoming horizontal as flowers open, 2-ranked, main spike 18-to 30-flowered, lateral spikes with fewer flowers; bracts firm-textured, purple below, apices dry and brown, outer apiculate or obscurely trifurcate, 5-7 mm long, inner usually slightly shorter than outer, shortly forked. Flowers zygomorphic, bright orange, facing to nodding or half-pendent, unscented; perianth tube trumpet-shaped, 16-20 mm long, slightly arched; tepals ± symmetrically disposed with dorsal slightly larger, inner tepals oval-elliptic, 15-16 x ± 9 mm, outer tepals narrowly deltoid, ± 14 x 5 mm. Filaments 13-15 mm long, exserted ± 3 mm; anthers parallel, contiguous, 6-7 mm long, yellow; pollen yellow. Style arching adaxial to filaments, 20-23 mm long, dividing just below anther bases, branches 5-10 mm long, laxly spreading, forked apically. Capsules depressed-globose and 3-lobed, 6-7 x 8 mm diam. Seeds angular-prismatic, dark red-brown, ± 3 mm long, mostly 1 or 2(3) per locule.
