Characteristics

Annual herb, stems up to 150 mm long; ± prostrate, laterally branched, retrorsely pubescent. Leaves small, 1 or 2 radical pairs (shed early), elliptic, tapering into broad petiole; cauline leaves spathulate; petioles shortening upwards, mostly glabrous. Flowers in terminal, crowded heads, forming narrow, many-headed panicles. Bracts adnate to pedicel and ± halfway up sepal tube. Calyx bilabiate, 5-lobed, pubescent. Corolla broadly funnel-shaped; limb bilabiate, 5-lobed; lobes white or light cream-coloured, bud violet outside with orange patch at base of posticous lip and halfway down back of tube. Fruit a pair of soft-walled cocci.
