Characteristics

Perennial unbranched herb, up to 300 mm tall. Leaves crowded in basal rosette or opposite on elongated stems, margin entire or slightly crenate. Bracts papery, with spinulose margin, terminating in recurved tip 1.5-5.0 mm long, longer than upper lateral teeth. Bracts, bracteoles, calyx and corolla with capitate glands. Flowers pale red to scarlet or salmon.

Bracts of C. greenstockii are frequently entire and this probably led to the confusion with C. pungens. Bracts covered in long stalked glandular trichomes; anticous corolla sinus less than 130°; seed scales narrow, apices deeply toothed.
