Erect or spreading annual or short-lived perennial, up to 5–12(–18) dm. tall, slender-stemmed, laxly branched above, glabrous or practically so.. Leaves subsessile, simple; blade varying from linear to oblong-lanceolate or elliptic, up to 10–85 mm. long, 2–10 mm. wide, glaucous.. Stipules absent.. Racemes lax, up to 4–15(–20) cm. long, 3–12-flowered; bracts linear to narrowly elliptic, 1–9 mm. long; bracteoles inserted on the pedicel, filiform, small.. Calyx 4–6(–7) mm. long, glabrous or sparsely puberulous; lobes narrow, much longer than the tube.. Standard suborbicular, pale yellow, veined brown outside; wings longer than the keel, bright yellow; keel semi-orbicular, crested behind the small often slightly circumflexed blunt beak, 6–8 mm. long.. Pod cylindrical, with the 2·5–7 mm. long stipe ± 16–32 mm. long, glabrous, ± 12–32-seeded.. Seeds obliquely oblong-cordiform, 2–3 mm. long, smooth, shiny bottle-green to brown.

Grassland, widespread; deciduous woodland, open bushland; restricted to locally damp places in generally dry areas, also roadsides and cultivated ground; at elevations of 400-2,000 metres.
