Characteristics

Low herb of varied habit, producing from an ultimately woody rootstock numerous slender pubescent stems, which may be trailing in open places, ascending in other vegetation or rather strictly erect after burning, up to 15–30 cm tall, ultimately copiously branched.

Flowers 1–2 on filiform leaf-opposed peduncles scattered along the branches; peduncle usually c. 1 cm long, rarely up to 3 cm; bracts 1–3 mm long, linear or linear-lanceolate; bracteoles inserted at or near the top of the pedicel, linear.
Standard elliptic-obovate to subcircular, white becoming flushed red outside or rarely yellow, apically pubescent outside; wings exceeding the keel; keel 3–6 mm long, abruptly rounded with a practically straight tapered beak.
Leaves estipulate, sessile, 3-foliolate; leaflets 6–14 × 1.5–3(5) mm, oblanceolate to narrowly elliptic-oblong, ± pointed, sparsely to quite densely pilose on both surfaces.
Calyx 3–7 mm long, shortly appressed to rather coarsely pubescent; lobes narrowly attenuate-triangular, usually twice as long as the tube.
Pod subsessile, 1–1.6 cm long, cylindrical, spreading pubescent outside and also inside (at least along lower suture), 6–8-seeded.
Seeds 2–2.5 mm long, oblique-cordiform, smooth.
