Characteristics

Small, erect herb 0.14-0.25 m tall, much branched from a woody rootstock. Stems glabrous, slender, branched, angular, 4-5-ribbed, closely leafy. Leaves simple, sessile, alternate, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, (18-)25-30(-42) x (3-)5-10 mm, entire, mucronate at apex, glabrous. Stipules absent. Inflorescence a lax 3-5-flowered, terminal raceme; bracts linear to linear-lanceolate, up to 4 mm long. Pedicels slender, 7-9 mm long, muddy purple; bracteoles very small, variously inserted on pedicel. Calyx 5-7 mm long, glabrous to sparsely puberulous; lobes subulate to narrowly triangular-acuminate, about as long as tube, muddy purple. Standard elliptic to obovate-elliptic, up to 14 mm long and 10 mm wide, opening out at anthesis, pale pink, veined deep pink on inside, deep pink, tinged yellow, veined reddish on outside, fringed towards base, with appendages at base; wings up to 11 mm long and 3.5 mm wide, yellow, veined red, fringed towards base; keel angled in lower part with a long straight beak, 12 mm long and 5.5 mm wide, green with deep purple towards tip. Stamens monadelphous, tube split to base; anthers unequal. Style geniculate, constricted at bend, with hairs on dorsal and ventral side. Pods stalked, oblong-ellipsoid, 15 x 7 mm, pale green, tinged red at top, 3-4-seeded. Seeds small, broadly kidney-shaped, up to 2 mm long, smooth, flattish, greenish brown.
