Species

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae > Crotalaria

Characteristics

Erect annual, up to 1 m. tall, simple at first, only developing laxly inserted ascending branches above in the older plants.. Stem slightly ribbed, densely covered with rather long fine subappressed hairs.. Leaves 1-foliolate; leaflets below obovate-elliptic, up to 38–43 mm. long, 13–20 mm. wide, grading to linear-lanceolate above, up to 45–90 mm. long, 3–7 mm. wide, acute or rounded at the apex and prominently apiculate, glabrous or sparsely pubescent above, thinly appressed pubescent beneath; petiole ± 2–3 mm. long.. Stipules filiform, up to 3 mm. long, rather persistent.. Racemes long, subsessile, terminal, up to 25 cm. long, with many fairly closely arranged flowers, and sometimes other flowers clustered in the axils or on abbreviated racemes below; bracts linear, up to 2–3 mm. long; bracteoles inconspicuous.. Calyx 3·5–4 mm. long, with the tube protracted on the lower side, subappressed pubescent; upper lobes subulate-triangular, 2–3 times as long as the tube.. Standard elliptic, yellow, thinly pubescent outside; wings shorter than the keel; keel bent at right-angles in the lower third, with a long narrow twisted beak, 7–8·5 mm. long.. Pod sessile, oblong-ellipsoid, 5–6 mm. long, 3–4 mm. across, pubescent outside, pubescent along the suture inside, 2-seeded.. Seeds oblique-cordiform, up to 3 mm. long, smooth, greyish-green to purplish.
