Characteristics

Erect or straggling-ascending annual, up to 9 dm. tall, much branched.. Branches thinly pilose or (not in East Africa) appressed pubescent.. Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets elliptic or ovate-elliptic, up to 4·5–7 cm. long, 2·3–4 cm. wide, acute, sparsely pilose on both surfaces; petiole up to 3·3–6·5 cm. long.. Stipules filiform, up to 7 mm. long.. Racemes very lax, up to 10–17 cm. long, ± 3–10-flowered; bracts lanceolate, up to 10 mm. long, 4 mm. wide; bracteoles curved-ascending from the upper part of the pedicel, ovate, cordate, up to 10 mm. long.. Calyx practically enveloping the corolla, 10–12 mm. long, ciliate on the lobes, otherwise glabrous; upper lobes broadly ovate, cordate, rather unequal-sided, very much longer than the tube.. Standard suborbicular, clear yellow, sometimes tinged bluish or red behind and at the base inside, glabrous outside; wings broadly oblong-obovate, as long as the keel; keel strongly rounded about the middle, with a slightly incurved shortly twisted beak, 8–10 mm. long, white lanate-pubescent along the upper margin proximal to the beak.. Pod subcylindrical, broadest towards the apex and basally narrowed into a 5–9(–15) mm. long stipe, 36–45 mm. long, 9–12 mm. across, glabrous, thin-valved, with only 8–10 of the 40–50 ovules matured.. Seeds oblique-cordiform, up to 3 mm. long, smooth, yellowish-brown.
